The artwork consists of a variety of sculptures – bodies – dispersed around the grounds. The sculptures provide a demarcation in the landscape during the twice-daily journey from residential group to school and back. The rectangular bodies are reminiscent of compound modules from a do-it-yourself kit. The outside is covered with ceramic tiles. Tiles have long been used to cover surfaces, partly for practical and partly for aesthetic reasons. Glazed tiles ‘divide’ a surface into a particular rhythm or pattern. A range of decorative motifs were added to the tiled surfaces, alternating with tiles displaying faces of celebrities executed in relief, as well as anonymous archetypes and the faces of the young people themselves. The tiles with portraits on the ‘bodies’ are surrounded by tiles with decorative motifs. The different ‘bodies’, which combine to form a single sculpture on the grounds of De Maasberg, are repetitive in nature in spite of the different shapes and colours of the five segments. The different images therefore serve as a visual link around the grounds as well as marking the different locations. The working relationship with the young people was truly astonishing and superb. Full of enthusiasm, the young inmates of De Maasberg learned how to convey their own thoughts and feelings to a clay tile measuring 25 x 25 cm; the surface to be covered proved a manageable area for all those who took part. The results speak for themselves; each tile is utterly unique.
